A Gentle Reminder of Our Value
I was prompted to write this after receiving an email from my much-admired yoga teacher. She reminded me to take a moment today to recognise the incredible value I bring to my students and to my community. It’s a beautiful reminder that we all have something unique to offer.
By my early forties I had seen enough people pass through my yoga classes to understand a crucial truth: few truly improve from the passive interventions offered by regular adjustments at clinics or frequent visits to doctors for chronic dis-ease. However, those who attended my yoga classes often experienced significant improvements, especially the regular students who also practiced at home.
The Role of Active Intervention
With all due respect to the skilled work that physical therapists, osteopaths, and chiropractors provide, I’ve rarely witnessed these professions offer what I would call “active intervention” strategies. These strategies educate individuals on how they can help themselves and build internal resources for self-care. It’s challenging to provide the in-depth education and guidance necessary for real change in a mere 15-minute appointment.
These practitioners understand that true healing comes from a perspective that acknowledges the holistic nature of the body. They recognise the deep interconnections between the physical, energetic, emotional, and mental layers of self. What sets yoga apart from many Western medical approaches to dis-ease is the active involvement of the individual. Your chiropractor can’t strengthen your back for you. Your physical therapist can’t perform the daily practices that lead you toward stability, motor coordination, and balance. They can’t get out of bed for you and demonstrate the self-determination needed to cultivate well-being.
The Irreplaceable Gift of Yoga
Of course, there is a time and place for medical intervention, whether from a Western allopathic doctor or an alternative health practitioner. But what yoga teachers offer is simply irreplaceable. Where else can someone receive 90 minutes of carefully sequenced, intelligent instruction that incorporates breath awareness, body connectivity, and increased mindfulness?
Embracing the Journey
As I reflect on my journey, I invite you to consider your own. Yoga is not just a practice; it’s a way of life. It encourages us to explore our inner selves, to connect deeply with our bodies, and to cultivate a sense of peace that resonates through every aspect of our lives.
The Power of Community
In our yoga classes, we create a community that supports each other. This shared space allows us to grow together, to learn from one another, and to celebrate our individual journeys. The friendships formed on the mat often extend beyond it, enriching our lives in countless ways.
Finding Your Practice
Whether you are a seasoned yogi or just beginning your journey, remember that every practice is unique. It’s about finding what resonates with you, what brings you joy, and what helps you feel grounded. Explore different styles, teachers, and techniques until you discover what truly speaks to your heart.
The Path to Inner Peace
As we navigate the complexities of life, yoga serves as a gentle reminder to return to our breath, to our bodies, and to the present moment. It teaches us to embrace the ebb and flow of our experiences, fostering resilience and inner strength.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I encourage you to embrace the journey of yoga with an open heart. Allow it to guide you toward inner peace and physical well-being. Remember, the practice is not about perfection; it’s about progress, connection, and self-discovery.
With love ❤️
